My dear friend Maren Jo Schneider has a podcast called The Bible and the English Major. Season 3 of the podcast focused on the story of Martha and Mary, which only appears in Luke’s gospel. It questions whether Luke intended to spark a debate about the best way to love Jesus. For centuries, Martha, the sister who serves, has been contrasted with Mary, the sister who listens. By comparing Martha with the other disciples in the chapter, including the male ones, the series aims to end this long-standing discussion.
In the final episode of the series, I joined Maren as we discussed the ethics of who gets centered by the words of storytellers and by the actions of Jesus. In God’s upside-down kingdom, the margins become the middle. Join us in this enlightening conversation as we explore these profound themes together.
